Celebrating 70 Years of
Community Service
2008 was an anniversary year, celebrating 70 years of community service
by the Port Dover Lions Club.
Lion Chief Jim Fekete realising the importance of the event established
a committee, chaired most capably by Lion Pat Young, to organise
a Fun Year throughout 2008.
We wanted to invite the residents to help us celebrate, while giving back to
our most supportive and appreciative community.
Every Lion received an attractive
70th Anniversary Pin
(designed by the Lion Chief, shown on the left) as a Christmas present.
Since our Charter was granted in October, it was decided to have a
Family Fun Day
July 13th at Silver Lake, when the weather was more amiable. The kids had a
lot of FUN and all enjoyed the day's FREE festivities.
Lion Chief hoped this would become an annual event. The good will and
positive exposure to the community, especially the young people, from such
festivities is immeasurable. Capturing the hearts and minds of children
could build generations of enthusiastic and dedicated Lions.
It is often the
little things we do, that pay the biggest dividends.
The anniversary celebration took place October 1st in the Lions Community Centre,
on St. George Street. Special guests included Mayor Dennis Travale, Councillor
John Wells, Lions District Governor Al Beamer and representatives of many
Lions Clubs, guests and most Port Dover Lions, as well as many former
Lions club members.
Lion Lee Buffin, a member since 1972, spoke eloquently to the gathered about our
club's interesting
History and some accomplishments.
A fabulous meal was enjoyed by all, served by Knechtels. The meal was followed by
the talented Gord Massey performing his hilarious vaudeville act.
The evening concluded with the international recoding artist and local
favourite
Tia McGraff
and her husband delighting the gathered. Many thanks to all who helped make the
year a memorable and successful one. A huge thank you to all the clubs who
joined our celebrations and donated generously, wishing our club continued success.
